I’m fascinated by television programmes like Britain’s Got Talent and Fame Academy. It’s great when an unknown suddenly emerges – and someone who last week was working in a shop or as a cab driver suddenly becomes a chart-topper or a headliner in the West End.

I’m also amazed at the number of people who attend auditions really believing they have enough talent to be a superstar – even if the judges think otherwise.

We all have gifts, but we can’t all be in the spotlight. The majority of us will just go about our lives quietly, hopefully using the talents and gifts that we have.

But not all of us have a great belief in our abilities, and some of us have yet to discover our gifts. We may think our contribution to life is pretty unimportant, especially compared to the great things we think others are doing.

But God has plans and purposes for each one of us, and we all have something to contribute – that’s important to Him – even if we don’t know it yet.

In the New Testament, in the first letter to the Corinthians, St Paul writes that ‘God’s various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit.’ No gift is more important than another. Our inner selves are like our bodies. All the parts have different purposes and all are important in their own right.

God calls us all to be part of His work on earth. Each of us will have a path to follow and God will equip us accordingly.

Lord, You know us. With Your help may we discover and embrace the gifts You have given us, and then help us to explore ways in which we can use them to help improve our world and the lives of others. Amen.
